As many as 35 Bridgewater College students from two child development-related classes will present their research on April 25 at the Child Development Summit at Blue Ridge Community College.
The summit, which will be held in the Plecker Workforce Center, will attract more than 400 teachers and child care workers from across the state. It is designed to provide childcare professionals with current research findings. It is sponsored by Smart Beginnings.
From 9 a.m. until noon, the students from Bridgewater’s Child Development and Parent-Child Relationships classes will present posterboard displays containing researched-based information on the socio-emotional and cognitive development of children. The participation of Bridgewater’s students in the summit is the result of parenting education they did in Waynesboro last year at a low-income housing area.
Dr. Donna H. Hoskins, an assistant professor of health and human sciences at Bridgewater and faculty adviser for the students, noted that four of the presenters are about to be published in the Certified Family Life Education publication by the National Council on Family Relations. She said some of the students are majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences and are pursuing a concentration in child development or family life education. Some, she noted, operate the child development lab for three- and four-year-olds at Bridgewater College.
