Bridgewater College has received a $750 Walmart Foundation Community Grant that will help fund the college’s sustainability efforts. The Walmart Foundation awards funds through its local, national and international giving programs to support community-based projects and programs.

Teshome Molalenge, director of sustainability at Bridgewater, said the grant will allow the college to purchase more bicycles, parts and tools for its Bike Share program, which provides students with sustainable transportation and an enjoyable way to get around campus.

“Bike share programs are very popular on college campuses,” said Molalenge. “They promote health and environmental stewardship, and reduce the number of abandoned bikes on campus.”

Molalenge said Bridgewater College was also one of 14 colleges and universities nationwide to recently participate in a course in solar sustainability offered by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association.

The course, which guided campus teams through the process of developing solar energy projects, included the topics of engaging stakeholders, evaluating legal and regulatory restrictions, analyzing energy use and potential sites, modeling investment returns and preparing competitive solicitation documents.
