Solomon Barnes and Michael Brennan Presented a Recital at Bridgewater College

Solomon Barnes and Michael Brennan presented a senior recital on April 16 in the Concert Hall in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the audience was limited to students and faculty who were required to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

For his tenor voice recital, Barnes performed three pieces by Johannes Brahms:  “Meine Liebe ist grĂĽn,” “In Waldeseinsamkeit” and “Die Mainacht.” He also performed “Sure on This Shining Night” by Samuel Barber, words by James Agee, “Vouchsafe, O Lord” from Te Deum by George Frideric Handel and “Se vuol ballare” from The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Barnes also performed “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” by Roger Quilter, words by William Shakespeare, “Some Enchanted Evening” by Richard Rodgers, words by Oscar Hammerstein II, “Johanna” by Stephen Sondheim and “Questo amor, vergogna mia” from Edgar by Giacomo Puccini.

Barnes studies voice under Shannon Kiser, adjunct instructor of music at Bridgewater College. Lacey Johnson, instructor of music at Bridgewater College, accompanied Barnes on piano.

Barnes, a music major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Barnes of Columbia, Md. Barnes is a member of the Concert Choir, the Chorale and the Gospel Choir. He also performs with the Jazz Ensemble and the Pep Band.

For his piano recital, Brennan performed “Prelude in C Major” by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Mazurka in F Major” by Frédéric Chopin, “Moderato” and “Romanze” from Sonatina in G Major by Ludwig van Beethoven and “Rondo Capriccio” by Lynn Freeman Olson. He also performed “Waltz in B Minor” by Franz Schubert, “Arabesque” by Friedrich Burgmüller, “Toccatina” by Susan Ogilvy and “To a Wild Rose” by Edward MacDowell.

Brennan studies piano under Dr. Larry Taylor, professor of music at Bridgewater College.

Brennan, a music major, is from Harrisonburg, Va. He is a member of the Jazz Ensemble.
