Bridgewater College senior Daniel Hancock was awarded the Dale V. Ulrich Physics Scholarship, which honors a former professor of physics and dean and provost of the College.
The $1,390 scholarship, based on academic merit, is given annually to an outstanding student in the physics department.Â
Hancock, a physics major from Ferrum, Va., is the son of Todd and Barbara Hancock.
He is a member of the Bridgewater College Philomathes Society, which recognizes students, faculty and alumni who have achieved unusual distinction in the pursuit of knowledge; Alpha Chi, a national college scholarship honor society; and Sigma Pi Sigma, a national physics honor society. Hancock also has participated in the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Pep Band during his time at Bridgewater College.
After graduation, Hancock plans to attend graduate school for astronomy and astrophysics.
Ulrich, who came to Bridgewater in 1958, served for 38 years on the Bridgewater faculty—15 years as dean of the college, nine years as provost and 14 years as professor of physics. He retired in 1999 and lived in Bridgewater, Va., until his death in March 2021.
