Three Bridgewater College students were presented the John W. and Lurene M. Durna Award for Excellence in Pre-Law Studies.
The John W. and Lurene M. Durna Endowed Scholarship Fund memorializes the affection that John ’39 and Lurene ’40 had for their alma mater. The fund provides a scholarship to outstanding BC students who intend to pursue a career in law, achieve a grade point average of 3.25 or above, maintain good campus citizenship and are eligible for financial assistance.
The 2022 honorees were Katelyn Harrison, Samantha Klimczak and Erika Nettles.
Harrison, a junior history and political science major from Point of Rocks, Md., is an academic coach, tutor, and writer and editor for BC Voice, a student-run news organization on campus. She is also a SOAR mentor, a member of the Flory Honors Program, Pre-Law Society, Phi Alpha Theta history honor society and Sigma Tau Delta English society. Harrison has completed three research papers during her time at BC including “Law Review of Felon Disenfranchisement Laws in the U.S.,” “Analyzing Collective Memories from the Korean War: Historical Case Studies from South Korea and the United States” and research on the stigmas surrounding Chernobyl, Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
After graduating from BC in 2023, Harrison plans to attend law school.
Klimczak, a junior sociology major from Williamsburg, Va., has been a member of the cheerleading team, the Concert Choir, Chorale and the peer and bystander education organization BC United. Klimczak completed a qualitive research project, “Inside the Institute,” focused on analyzing attitudes, beliefs and experiences at military schools.
Nettles, a senior psychology major from Pittsboro, N.C., was a captain on the women’s basketball team. She was also an intramural coordinator and general equipment manager at the Funkhouser Center for Health and Wellness on campus. Off campus, Nettles works as a caregiver at Bridgewater Retirement Community.
Nettles will be attending BC’s master of science in psychology—mental health professions (MSPsy) program.
