SUMMARY:Lyceum Concert: New Orchestra of Washington
DESCRIPTION:AT A GLANCELyceum Concert: New Orchestra of WashingtonWhen: 7 p.m.\, Friday\, March 18Where: Concert Hall\, Carter Center for Worship and Music\, Bridgewater College’s campusNote: Attendees may arrive early for a panel discussion at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe New Orchestra of Washington (NOW) will present a lyceum concert at Bridgewater College on Friday\, March 18\, at 7 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Carter Center for Worship and Music. \n\n\n\nThe program\, “MADIBA: WATCHING THE SUNSET\,” will honor the legacy of South African anti-apartheid leader and activist Nelson Mandela. Mandela was known as Madiba\, a term of respect and affection. Mandela himself described his relationship with music as a key source of strength throughout his decades-long imprisonments during South Africa’s struggle to end apartheid and transition to a multicultural democracy. Inspired by this\, the program includes work by Handel and Tchaikovsky\, Mandela’s two favorite composers\, whose music sustained him during the most difficult part of his life. South African countertenor Roger O. Isaacs will perform the Handel arias. \n\n\n\nA special feature of the concert will be a world premiere by South African composer Mokale Koapeng. NOW also will present a premiere of Koapeng’s “Yixesha! Ke Nako (The Time is Now!)” commissioned by Classical Movements for New Orchestra of Washington. This performance is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nAn hour before the concert\, at 6 p.m.\, attendees are invited to a panel discussion featuring Koapeng and conductor Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez about the inspiration behind Koapeng’s piece\, the interaction between music and community\, and how this all connects to Nelson Mandela’s legacy. \n\n\n\nBoth the performance and panel discussion are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare

DESCRIPTION:Theatre at Bridgewater College Presents: Blue Heart by Caryl ChurchillWhen: Feb. 16-19\, 8 p.m.Where: Cole Hall \n\n\n\nTheatre at Bridgewater College presents “Blue Heart” from Feb. 16 through Feb. 19 in Cole Hall on the College’s campus. The show will begin at 8 p.m. each night. \n\n\n\nCaryl Churchill’s “Blue Heart” consists of two related short plays\, “Heart’s Desire” and “Blue Kettle”\, both examining strained family – and especially filial – relationships. \n\n\n\nIn “Heart’s Desire”\, Brian and his wife Alice\, together with Brian’s sister Maisie\, are waiting for the arrival of their daughter Susy\, who is returning home after some years spent in Australia. A simple domestic scenario is replayed over and over with widely differing developments – some heartbreaking\, some wildly comical or surreal. \n\n\n\nIn “Blue Kettle”\, a middle-aged man\, Derek\, and his girlfriend\, Enid\, are involved in a con trick\, making a series of elderly women believe that Derek is the son they once gave up for adoption. But as the situation develops\, the play’s dialogue undergoes a radical distortion.   \n\n\n\nTickets for the production are $10 for adults\, $8 for seniors (65 and older) and non-BC students\, and free for BC students\, faculty and staff. \n\n\n\nIn keeping with guidance from the CDC\, Bridgewater College requires that all individuals\, regardless of vaccination status\, properly wear face masks when indoors in public areas of campus. \n\n\n\nBlue Heart is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French\, Inc.\, www.concordtheatricals.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare

She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. White has been a working\, exhibiting sculptor since receiving her MFA in 1997 from the University of Colorado at Boulder where she studied with Scott Chamberlin\, Betty Woodman and Antonette Rosato. She has worked and lived in Fredericksburg\, Va.\, with her husband and three children since 2015. \n\n\n\n“My working process stems from a curiosity about the strangeness of everyday. It is this search for an unfamiliar view of the familiar that led me to abstraction and distortion\,” White’s artist statement reads. “An abstract form traps the viewer in the liminal state between knowing and not knowing. Because the object cannot be named or defined in a traditional sense\, the viewer must continually look back to the object for clues of its intended function and meaning.” \n\n\n\nThe gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight on Sunday.
