A book signing will follow the lecture. \n\n\n\nJohnson is one of the 2022 TIME200 Next\, TIME‘s annual list of rising stars\, as well as one of Out‘s 100 Most Influential LGBTQ People. They use their inspiring life story to teach individuals\, corporations and policymakers about LGBTQIA+ activism and social justice in healthcare. Johnson’s New York Times bestselling memoir All Boys Aren’t Blue\, a powerful recounting of their adolescence growing up as a young Black queer boy in New Jersey\, was optioned for television by Gabrielle Union and Sony TV and called “an exuberant\, unapologetic memoir infused with a deep but cleareyed love for its subjects” by the New York Times. \n\n\n\nThe endowed lecture is sponsored by the W. He created the podcast You Are Not So Smart based on his 2009 international best seller of the same name and its follow-up\, You Are Now Less Dumb. \n\n\n\nBefore that\, McRaney cut his teeth as a newspaper reporter covering Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast and in the Pine Belt region of the Deep South. Later\, he covered topics like who tests rockets for NASA\, what it’s like to run a halfway home for HIV-positive people experiencing homelessness\, and how a family sent their kids to college by making and selling knives. Since then\, McRaney has been an editor\, photographer\, voiceover artist\, TV host\, journalism teacher\, lecturer and tornado survivor. Most recently\, after finishing his latest book How Minds Change\, he wrote\, produced and recorded a six-hour audio documentary exploring the history of the idea and the word genius. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Zane D. Barber II will present an endowed lecture at Bridgewater College on Wednesday\, Jan. 18.  \n\n\n\nBarber will deliver the keynote address\, “We are Called to Be a Movement\,” as part of BC’s annual celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. In 2018\, Barber helped relaunch the Poor People’s Campaign—which was begun by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others in 1968—with a historic wave of protests in state capitals and in Washington\, D.C.\, called for a moral agenda and a moral budget. A former Mel King Fellow at MIT\, Barber is currently a Visiting Professor of Public Theology and Activism at Union Theological Seminary and Senior Fellow at Auburn Seminary. He was named one of BET’s 100 Entertainers and Innovators in 2020 and is a 2019 recipient of the North Carolina Award—the state’s highest civilian honor. Barber has also received the MacArthur Foundation Genius Award\, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award\, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center’s Beloved Community Award and the Puffin Award. \n\n\n\nThe endowed lecture is sponsored by the Harry W. and Ina Mason Shank Peace Studies Endowment\, the Kline-Bowman Institute for Peace and Justice\, the Weimer Christian Vocation of Peace and Peacemaking Lectureship Fund\, and the Christian Leadership Endowment Fund. Register at bridgewater.edu/addarioNote: The date and time of this event have changed. \n\n\n\nPhotojournalist Lynsey Addario\, who covers major conflict zones across the globe including the Middle East\, South Asia\, Haiti and Africa\, will present an endowed lecture on Tuesday\, March 29\, at 5 p.m.\, hosted virtually on Zoom by Bridgewater College. \n\n\n\nAddario’s lecture\, “Leaving Your Comfort Zone: The Importance of Art\,” will discuss the importance of art in our society and the role it has in making us think\, to inspire and to push us out of our comfort zones. The virtual event is available to the public and can be accessed via Zoom by registering at bridgewater.edu/addario. \n\n\n\nAddario was named one of 20 women on Oprah Winfrey’s Power List for her “Power of Bearing Witness” and one of Glamour magazine’s 20 Women of the Year in 2011. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, Addario was the official photographer for the Nobel Peace Center’s 10th peace prize exhibition\, photographing winners Malala Yousefzai and Kailash Satyarthi at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo\, Norway. In 2015\, American Photo magazine named Addario one of five “most influential photographers” of the past 25 years for changing the way we see world conflict. \n\n\n\nMost recently\, she has covered the current Russia-Ukraine conflict\, the coronavirus pandemic\, the Syrian refugee crisis\, the ISIS advance in Iraq\, the civil war in South Sudan and the flow of African and Middle Eastern migrants into Sicily. \n\n\n\nAddario has been the recipient of numerous international awards throughout her career\, including a MacArthur Fellowship\, or “Genius Grant\,” in 2009\, the Overseas Press Club’s Olivier Rebbot Award for her series “Veiled Rebellion: Afghan Women” and the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for her photographs in the New York Times Magazine’s “Talibanistan.”  \n\n\n\nThis endowed lecture is sponsored by the W. A live-stream of the event will be available at bridgewater.edu/albright.\n\nDr. Madeleine Albright\, a professor\, author\, diplomat and businesswoman who served as the 64th Secretary of State of the United States (1997-2001)\, will present an endowed lecture on Wednesday\, Oct. 6\, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College. \n\nThe event\, In Conversation with Madeleine Albright\, is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m. The format for the event is a moderated conversation on stage in Cole Hall with Bridgewater College President Dr. David Bushman.  \n\nIn keeping with guidance from the CDC\, Bridgewater College requires that all individuals\, regardless of vaccination status\, properly wear face masks when indoors in public areas of campus. \n\nAlbright was named the first female Secretary of State in 1997 and became\, at that time\, the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. As Secretary of State from 1997-2001\, Albright reinforced America’s alliances\, advocated for democracy and human rights\, and promoted American trade\, business\, labor and environmental standards abroad. \n\nFrom 1993 to 1997\, Albright served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was a member of the President’s Cabinet. From 1989 to 1992\, she served as President of the Center for National Policy. Prior to that\, she was a member of President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Council and White House staff\, as well as having served as Chief Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie. \n\nAlbright received the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, the nation’s highest civilian honor\, from President Barack Obama on May 29\, 2012. \n\nNow based in Washington\, D.C.\, Albright is a Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. She is Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group\, a global strategy firm\, and Chair of Albright Capital Management LLC\, an investment advisory firm focused on emerging markets. Albright also chairs the National Democratic Institute\, serves as the president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation and is honorary co-chair of the World Refugee Council. \n\nA seven-time New York Times bestselling author\, Albright’s most recent book\, Hell and Other Destinations\, was published in April 2020.
